Questions and Answers

What is SaaS Maker? SaaS Maker is a development platform for building business applications delivered as subscription-based services. It’s available online, or as a portable appliance.

Why use SaaS Maker? Lots of reasons. You’ll build and deploy faster. Your apps will be cloud-native, SaaS-enabled, NIST-aligned, robust, secure, mobile friendly, and available “as a service” or as a portable appliance. And, you can publish your apps for subscription sale in the SaaS Maker App Store.

Who uses SaaS Maker? SaaS Maker can be used by system integrators who are building, migrating and SaaS (or cloud) enabling applications for their customers. It’s also great for individuals who are launching dotcoms.

How do I get started?
1) Sign up for a free developer’s account, and then sign in.
2) Create a boilerplate application (app).
3) Press the <Design> button to start building your app.
Also see the developer’s guide.

How much does SaaS Maker cost?

  • SaaS Maker is FREE (online) for developers
  • If you sell subscriptions, then SaaS Maker shares revenues
  • If you need a portable appliance, call for pricing

What types of applications can I build?
SaaS Maker is most suited for building multi-user applications for people working together. It’s been used to create systems for managing dispersed engineering teams, marketing campaigns, non-profits, event planning, driver logistics, and many other types of systems. Your applications will be cloud-native.

How are SaaS Maker apps cloud native?

The applications adhere to the NIST Reference Architecture for Cloud Computing (SP 500-292), NIST Definition of Cloud Computing (NIST SP 800-145), and the recent clarification of the definition as described in NIST SP 500-322.

How does SaaS Maker compare?

  • SaaS Maker is a true software-as-a-service platform
  • Point-and-click tools to rapid prototype applications
  • Build once, sell many (launch  subscriptions and make money)

Is SaaS Maker open? The open API lets developers integrate with existing open source, legacy and 3rd-party systems from various vendors and languages.

Is SaaS Maker portable? Yes! Ask about our Data Center appliance.

How do I make master-detail forms? Our design philosophy is to enable you to use your favorite design tools without being locked-into ours. The “fast forms” feature is quick-and-easy.. but if you want to get fancy, then the SDK lets you integrate amazing forms. We like Visual Studio.

How do I publish my software on the cloud? Simply set a price for the app and mark as “Published.” A <Sign Up> button appears on your app so that your customers can subscribe to it.

How do I make money? If you choose to sell your apps, then you receive the sale price minus a platform usage fee.

How secure is the SaaS Maker platform?
SaaS Maker applications are much more secure than ground-up applications because they incorporate a tried and true security engine that includes:

  • Role-based access control
  • Strong passwords
  • Timeouts
  • Password expirations
  • Optional two-factor authorization tokens and secure socket layer

By default, SaaS Maker runs on the secure Amazon Web Services:

  • ISO 27001 certification
  • Level 1 service provider under the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard
  • FISMA moderate
  • Platform for applications with Authorities to Operate under the Defense Information Assurance Certification and Accreditation Program

Is SaaS Maker aligned with the NIST Reference Architecture for Cloud Computing?
Yes! SaaS Maker -designed apps inherently align with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Reference Architecture for Cloud Computing.

How does SaaS Maker work?
SaaS Maker includes three main parts:

  1. The SaaS Maker Factory: Easy-to-use design tools for building business applications without programming. Add rich user experiences, forms, workflows, reports, and even publish your “apps” as subscription-based services;
  2. Platform as a Service (PaaS): A “prefab” application architecture delivered as an on-demand cloud service. The platform manages complex functions: sign-on, user administration, role-based security, application multi-tenancy and scaling. The good news is that you can simply accept the magic;
  3. SDK and open API: Empowers developers to build applications that leverage and extend the platform, limited only by their wildest imaginations!

What about SaaS migrations?
Developers can use the API to cloud-enable legacy systems; and/or to consolidate legacy systems on a common platform. It’s the easiest way to knock down stovepipes and dramatically lower your long-term costs of ownership.
